State should use sand, not salt, on icy roads

My mom and I were in Minnesota in winter a while back. We saw sand all around, and a resident told us sand is used because, although it is more expensive than salt, it helps the roads to remain in the shape they should be. The initial investment pays off in the long run because this man said he hasn’t seen potholes since the state still used salt. It’s a shame other states with hard winters don’t realize the savings in the end. This is not to mention the accidents and car problems that potholes can cause.
