NYSCHSAA Class A semifinal: Nichols vs. Holy Trinity

When: 1 p.m. today at Kellenberg High (L.I.).

New York State Sportswriters Association Class A ranking: 17. Holy Trinity; 25. Nichols.

How they got here: Nichols beat Bishop Timon-St. Jude to win the Manhattan Cup.

Nichols starters and key reserves: 6-5 jr. Cam Lewis, 6-5 jr. Chris Miner, 5-11 sr. Seth Meyer, 6-3 sr. Tom Nuttle; 6-7 jr. Tanner Schmit (injured); 6-0 sr. Jack Vance, 6-0 sr. Jordan Tyson.

Court vision: Nichols, considered a Class B (small) school this season, has gone on one of the most impressive postseason runs in recent history as it knocked off heavily favored Canisius in the semifinals and beat another large school in Bishop Timon-St. Jude in the title game. The Manhattan Cup title earns the Vikings a necessary promotion into the Class A bracket, and what’s waiting there is pretty familiar. Nichols coach John Reinholz is a Long Island native and graduate of Holy Trinity, and Nichols played at HT during an early-season downstate swing, losing, 86-56, on Dec. 13 before winning at Kellenberg, site of today’s game, the next day.

Who’s got next: The winner advances to the New York State Catholic High School Athletic Association Class A championship game against the winner of Tuesday’s 8 p.m. New York City final between Bishop Ford and Xavier. If Nichols wins, the Catholic state finals in both Class A and B will be held next Saturday at Canisius College. If Nichols loses, local Class B representative St. Mary’s will travel to a downstate location for the B title game. St. Mary’s will play the winner of Tuesday’s 5:30 p.m. New York City Class B title game between Sacred Heart and Regis.
