Batavia to vote on giving vets a break on school taxes

BATAVIA – Voters in the Batavia School District will face an added item on the annual vote in May: whether to extend real estate tax exemptions to veterans.

The vote will be advisory, a “straw” vote on an issue that would force non-veterans to pick up the slack. The tax rate would not be affected.

There are about 1,800 veterans – mostly homeowners – in the district that includes the city and small areas of the towns of Batavia and Stafford. The exemption would range from 15 to 50 percent depending on veterans’ service.

Typical home assessments range from $85,000 to $100,000 in most of the district.

If approved in the straw poll and by the School Board, the measure would go into effect in 2015 since a March 1 deadline set by the state has passed.

The May 20 ballot will contain the 2014-2015 budget, School Board vacancies and the sale of a large unused parcel of land, once considered for an athletic field.
