LP Ciminelli wins bid for first phase of UB medical school construction

LP Ciminelli has won a $52.05 million contract for the first phase of construction for the new building for the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, which is moving from UB’s South Campus to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

The initial phase of construction on the eight-story, 540,000-square-foot building includes excavation, putting in the foundations and structural-steel framing and is set to begin later this month, weather permitting.

The State University of New York Construction Fund awarded the bid. LP Ciminelli was the lowest bidder among three companies that sought the work, UB said Wednesday.

LP Ciminelli has an approved plan to reach 13.2 percent minority-owned and 12.3 percent women-owned participation in the project, exceeding the university system’s goals of 12 percent and 10 percent, respectively, for each category, according to fund officials.

The second of the three construction phases – involving work on the façade and roof, the interior and the plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems – likely will be put to bid in late spring. The final phase consists of furniture, fixtures and equipment.

The new medical school, at Main and High streets, is scheduled to open in fall 2016 and its $375 million cost will be covered by private philanthropy and state funding.
