Chautauqua Lake, which lost only to Class AA power Jamestown in the Red Raiders’ own tournament, overpowered Tapestry Charter of Buffalo to win the overall Section VI Class C girls basketball championship Wednesday night at Jamestown High. The Thunderbirds ran their winning streak to 18, 66-32, holding the Thunderhawks to single digits in every quarter but the second.
“It’s a talented group and they keep getting better,” said Chautauqua Lake coach Eric Schuster. “Right now, we’re where we wanted to be all along,”
Junior Jenna Einink, who has been a starter since eighth grade, led the Thunderbirds with 21 points. Junior Ashton Albanesius had 15 and Taylor Phelps, who started last season as a freshman, had 10. Senior Adila Gathers and junior Shequana Owens had 10 points each for Tapestry.
It’s the first sectional championship in girls basketball for CL, which advanced to the Far West Regional against Keshequa of Section V.
