A man and his dog died in a fire Tuesday night in a 1½-story wooden house at 65 Sirret St. in South Buffalo.

Firefighters have not yet released the identity of the man because they are still trying to reach his relatives.

“I’m told he lived alone though his fiance sometimes spent time there, but she was not there last night,” Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield said. ”When firefighters arrived, police were already at the scene evacuating neighbors from either side of the burning house.”

The man was described as between 40 and 50 years of age.

How the fire started remains under investigation and fire marshals were expected to be at the structure this morning, Whitfield said. The fire caused about $120,000 damages.

“The fire was pretty heavy when we arrived and the marshals didn’t get into the house last night,” the commissioner said.

Firefighters were called to the scene just before 10 p.m.
