Authorities identify Southtowns man killed in Concord crash

The Southtowns man fatally injured in a Concord crash late Saturday when his car was struck by a pickup truck has been identified as 31-year-old Joseph R. Pinelli, of Springville, Erie County sheriff’s officials said Monday.

Pinelli lost control of his small southbound car, which slid into oncoming traffic and was struck broadside by the pickup shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Route 240, officials stated.

Witnesses told deputies that the vehicle slid to the right side of the road before veering into the northbound lane, where the car was struck by the pickup before ending up in a roadside ditch.

Several motorists stopped to try to help the victim, who was trapped in his car. Members of the East Concord Fire Company freed Pinelli and took him to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville, where he died a short time later.

Deputies say it does not appear Pinelli was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the pickup, William Hastie, 21, of Angola, was not injured, deputies said.

The investigation into the cause of the crash continues. The Sheriff’s Office said the roadway was wet from falling snow but was not snow-covered.
