A 40-year-old construction worker suffered a minor head injury just before 9 a.m. Thursday at a downtown renovation project, according to fire officials and coworkers.

The individual, whose name was not released, was standing beside an excavator digging a trench at the rear of a building on the south side of Seneca Street between Elm and Michigan streets when a buried pipe became dislodged and struck the worker in the jaw and face, coworkers said, adding that he remained conscious.

As a precaution, the worker was transported to Buffalo General Hospital for treatment, an official at the work site said. The accident occurred at what is being developed into β€œThe Apartments at the Hub,” formerly the home of a long-time commercial tent and awning business in the multistory brick structure, adjacent to Coca-Cola Field.
