Sticking to the basics

Ryan Campagna got his first taste of what it’s like to be a doctor at Roswell Park Cancer Institute when he was an undergrad at Canisius College. He hopes to one day work there, but meanwhile he’s in his last year at Ohio State Medical School and has a cross-country bike ride to make.

Campagna, 25, will dip the back tire of his Felt Z4 into the Pacific Ocean and his front tire into the Atlantic about 50 days later in Washington, D.C., as part of the Ride for World Health, a cross-country trek that raises awareness about global health needs. Learn more at

How does a fourth-year med student eat?

Hopefully, not out of a vending machine. I like to be a whole foods, plant-based kind of guy. For the morning, I like to have oatmeal with blueberries, strawberries or other fruit; if not that, some wheat toast and eggs. For lunch, I keep it simple and fast. Peanut butter and jelly is kind of a staple for me, and then something with crunch – pretzels or vegetable sticks or carrots – then a piece of fruit or some yogurt. For dinner, I like to try to get into as many veggies as I can. I absolutely love salads of any kind, spinach or romaine or anything. That’s when I might have some chicken or fish. Rice and beans is another staple for me. If I have room, a nice glass of wine. It’s good for your heart. Pinot noir is my favorite.
