Niagara hockey loses on home ice

LEWISTON — Niagara University outshot Mercyhurst, 40-25, but still dropped a 4-2 decision to the visitors on Saturday night in Dwyer Arena.

Mercyhurst jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period before NU’s pressure finally paid off at 11:37 off the stick of Isaac Kohls. TJ Sarcona picked up the assist when he skated the puck up the near boards and slipped it to Kohls for the short-range blast that beat Mercyhurst goaltender Jimmy Sarjeant for his team-leading 12th goal.

The Purple Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the third when Dan Kolenda delivered with his second goal of the year.

Mercyhurst answered with the game’s final two goals courtesy of Kyle Dutra and Nardo Nagtzaam. Grant Gettinger started the go-ahead goal, lifting a soft wrist shot through traffic that was tipped over the shoulder of NU goalie Jackson Teichroeb by Kyle Dutra at 17:03. Niagara pulled Teichroeb with just under 2 minutes remaining, but Nagtzaam added an empty-netter.

Teichroeb pushed aside 21 Mercyhurst shots. Niagara wraps up the regular season next weekend when it hosts Air Force at Dwyer Arena on Feb. 28 and March 1.
