Silver Creek takes steps to prevent flooding

SILVER CREEK – Mayor Nick Piccolo said Tuesday that he expects dredging and digging equipment on loan from Chautauqua County to be at the creek today to try to open a channel and avert possible flooding.

“This will be the fourth time we prepared for a flood,” he said. The village has avoided serious damage three other times this winter from the freezing and thawing. “We don’t know what is in store this time because we don’t know how much snow and ice is up in the hills and on its way down to us,” the mayor said. He said that crews have built up large piles of ice along the banks of the creek and the goal is to open a passage for water and ice in the center of the creek.

In a separate matter, the mayor said a power failure lasted about 12 hours from 10 p.m. Monday until Tuesday morning. The mayor said the outage was caused by a failure in a transformer and about 3,000 homes and businesses were affected. He said New York State Electric and Gas was still looking into the cause.
