Canisius’ Pierce honored

Canisius College pitcher Rohn Pierce (Newfane) was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week for his performance in the Griffins’ 3-0 victory over North Carolina State in the season opener Sunday in Raleigh, N.C. Pierce threw seven shutout innings in the victory over the Wolfpack, which is rated No. 5 and No. 8 in national polls. Pierce was one of eight players across the country to receiver the weekly honor from Collegiate Baseball.

The Griffs did not have as much luck in their return game with N.C. State on Monday, losing 11-4. Canisius starting pitcher Devon Stewart gave up eight runs in 2.1 innings. Brandon Bielecki, the second of three Griffs hurlers pitched 4.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk. Anthony Massicci had a pair of hits and two runs batted-in for Canisius.

Canisius will return to the field for a three-game series at Charlotte, starting with a 4 p.m. game on Friday.
