Olean scraps artificial turf for stadium upgrade

OLEAN – Plans to install artificial turf as part of the ongoing renovations at Bradner Stadium have been scrapped as too costly.

Instead, current plans call for replacing the asphalt with crushed limestone, the material that is used for the warning track of the baseball field, city Public Works Director Tom Windus told the Olean Local Development Corp. last week during an update on plans for the upcoming sports season.

The stadium also is used for a variety of community events, including the popular Rally in the Valley motorcycle gathering and charitable fundraiser. Windus said a paved section at the south end of the stadium also will be added to accommodate motorcyclists.

The plan is to do away with what once served as an asphalt running track in the north part of the stadium. Windus noted that plans to install artificial turf for sports, including for use by the New York Collegiate Baseball Association affiliate Olean Oilers, proved unaffordable.

While plans for the limestone field as an alternative seem to be firm, still uncertain are plans for the current concession stands at the stadium’s east end. That uncertainty is stirring concern among organizations that rely on concessions to raise funds.

Though no plans to raze the concession stands are currently in place, this could occur at a moment’s notice, said Windus, who added that new concession stands, restrooms and locker rooms are projected for completion by the 2015 sports season.

“We will have to let the organizations that use the stadium know what may happen,” Windus said.

Advertising is another source of revenue being investigated. Banners and signs on fences, railings and the outfield wall are viewed as a possible revenue stream for teams and organizations.

Corporation President Brian O’Connell said City Attorney Mark Howden is researching that possibility.
