RANSOMVILLE – Alexander J. Makowski, a retired mechanical, structural and electrical engineer, died Monday in Niagara Hospice, Lockport. He was 92.
Born in Warsaw, Poland, one of seven children, he fought in the Polish Underground during World War II and served in the Polish Army.
After the war, Mr. Makowski studied at the University of Rome and lived in England for 10 years before immigrating to the United States.
He met and married his wife of 55 years, the former Sonya Van Schaick, while working in Cobleskill, then took a job in Buffalo, where he lived for 40 years.
He earned a degree in engineering from the University of Buffalo. He moved to Ransomville about 10 years ago.
Early in his career, he had a pilot’s license.
He also enjoyed travel, camping and World War II history.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Jeffrey; a daughter, Yvette Vincent; three grandchildren and numerous family members in Poland.
