Niagara women rally to win; Canisius loses at home

The Niagara and Canisius women’s basketball teams were both at home on Thursday night, but they had different results.

Chanel Johnson and Victoria Rampado both had 21 points as the Purple Eagles took a 65-57 decision from Siena.

Meanwhile, the Golden Griffins (9-15, 5-10) dropped a 52-44 decision to Manhattan.

Niagara made a big comeback in the second half. The Purple Eagles trailed, 32-25, at the half, and later fell behind, 43-30, with about 13 minutes left to play. Niagara came back and finally tied the game at 55-all with two minutes to go, and then outscored the Saints, 10-2, to pull it out. The Purple Eagles’ shooting picked up in the second half.

The victory ended a three-game losing streak for Niagara, and improved their overall record to 7-16 (5-9 Metro Atlantic).

Meanwhile, Canisius trailed most of the way against the Jaspers. The Golden Griffins have lost three of their last four games, and four of their last six.

Kayla Hoohuli led Canisius with 11 points, while Shayne Ericksen had 13 for the Jaspers to take game honors.

Niagara, Canisius, Manhattan and Monmouth are bunched in the middle of the conference standings, so games will be important down the stretch as teams get ready for the MAAC Tournament.

The teams will trade opponents on Saturday, as Niagara hosts Manhattan and Siena plays at Canisius.
