Having some fun with the funnies

I’ve gotten to know a young man over the last couple of years, and his name is Jeremy. Jeremy Duncan. Jeremy lives in the Zits comic strip – Page C4 in today’s newspaper – along with his parents, Connie and Walt. Jeremy is in high school – what a coincidence; so is our daughter! – so I enjoy turning to the comics page to read the latest installment.

To me, it’s like being handed a delicious Danish to savor with my coffee. Minus the calories.

Not only do I laugh, I occasionally reach for my scissors. I’ve never snipped comic strips from the newspaper before – until I started reading Zits.

So one recent day I opened the paper to find Jeremy heading out the door with wet hair, much to his mother’s disapproval, only to arrive at his destination shivering.

“I can’t believe my mom sent me out with wet hair!” he says.

Snip, snip, snip.

Another time, I find him complaining that he has no clean clothes.

“All you had to do was get them to the laundry room,” his mother tells him, eyeing the piles of dirty clothes on his bedroom floor.

“Blaming you is simpler,” Jeremy tells her.

“Give my regards to the Maytag,” she replies, exiting his room.

Snip, snip, snip.

Messy bedroom? Homework angst? Candy wrappers in flight? Multiple electronics going at once? Have authors Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman been to our homes?

Wait, I just read their bios. They’re parents, too.

So earlier this week, I showed one of my daughter’s friends a Zits strip I had clipped – the one with Jeremy and his wet hair. Mind you, through the years I have seen a lot of wet hair on my car-pooling rounds.

“Isn’t this funny?” I asked, eager for her response.

She read it, smiled politely and handed it back to me. Maybe I’ll show it to her again in another 15 years.
