Woman pleads guilty in staged drugstore robbery

LOCKPORT – A woman who took part in a fake robbery at the North Tonawanda drugstore where she worked pleaded guilty Friday and was assigned to the judicial diversion program of court-supervised drug treatment by County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas.

Kayla M. Hotaling, 23, of Beattie Avenue, Town of Lockport, admitted to third-degree grand larceny and agreed to repay the CVS store on Payne Avenue $678 not recovered by police after the Oct. 3 incident.

Her boyfriend, Kevin M. Spellane-Newman, 24, of East Amherst, took the same plea deal Dec. 10.

Police said Hotaling, who said Friday she was robbed herself at the store in 2009, set up the incident to make it look as if she had been pistol-whipped by an intruder who made off with $3,784 from the pharmacy.
