Hurwitz & Fine member Steven E. Peiper was awarded the Sheldon Hurwitz Young Lawyer of the Year Award, presented by the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. The award, named for the co-founder of the law firm, is awarded to a lawyer admitted 10 years or less who has made a significant impact in the industry. Peiper is the fourth Hurwitz & Fine attorney to receive this distinction since the award’s creation.


The Buffalo Broadcasters Association re-elected Dave Gillen of WGRZ-TV president. Other officers: vice president, Heidi Raphael of Greater Media; and secretary/treasurer, Herb Flemming of Flemming Communications. Don Angelo, retired local sales manager of WGRZ-TV, remains chairman of the organization. The law firm Simpson and Simpson appointed Jeffrey B. Powers a registered patent attorney. Powers was an in-house patent counsel for Bausch & Lomb for eight years. He received his master’s degree from the University of Rochester, a bachelor’s degree from the University at Buffalo, and he is a graduate of the New Hampshire School of Law Franklin Pierce Intellectual Property Law Center.

The John R. Oishei Foundation awarded a $650,000 challenge grant to the Heritage Center’s Maryvale School to help make breathing easier for students with special needs. The challenge grant was matched by other significant donors, and work is set to begin immediately on two major upgrades to the school. New windows and new cooling systems will be installed at the site over the next several months.
