Gates Institute implants subcutaneous defibrillator

The Gates Vascular Institute has become the first health care facility in Western New York to implant a subcutaneous defibrillator in a heart patient, Kaleida Health announced.

The patient, a City of Tonawanda woman, has recovered from the procedure and has returned home, Kaleida reports.

The implant was performed by Dr. Chee Kim, the only electrophysiologist currently using the procedure here.

The subcutaneous defibrillator, or S-ICD, developed by Boston Scientific, is about the size of a Mason jar lid and is placed just below the skin and eliminates the need for electrodes to be inserted in the heart.

To date, more than 1,400 S-ICD devices have been implanted in patients worldwide.
