Pedestrian concerns raised for Lockport ice rink

LOCKPORT – The city Planning Board Monday urged the architects of the Lockport Ice Arena and Sports Center to present plans to the Traffic Advisory Committee for safeguarding pedestrians crossing Chestnut Street to get into the rink, scheduled to open in September.

“I’m just afraid some little kid’s going to run across that street. There’s no barricades at all,” Planning Board member Linda Roth said.

The municipal parking lot opposite the rink site on Chestnut Street is a key component of the parking plan for the $13 million twin-rink complex, although there will be 82 parking spaces along the building itself.

The recommendation was made as the board approved a request for a minor change to the traffic plan on the site, changing a rear driveway off Union Street from two-way to one-way traffic.
