Veterans court helps Lockport man win reduced plea

LOCKPORT – A Lockport man who worked with Buffalo veterans court for more than two years on his problems with alcohol abuse was allowed to cancel his felony assault plea Wednesday.

Instead, Arnold M. Cogar, 54, of Mill Street, was allowed by Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas to plead guilty to third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. He is to be sentenced to three years probation April 4, with the time served since his December 2011 plea counting toward the three years.

Cogar originally pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree assault for pointing an unloaded 12-gauge shotgun at a woman and pulling the trigger several times, and also threatening her with a large kitchen knife.
