LOCKPORT – Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas gave a Lockport woman a chance Wednesday to avoid state prison on a cocaine possession charge.

She placed Dawn L. Johnson, 59, of Waterman Street, on six months of interim probation before a final sentence on her guilty plea to a reduced charge of attempted fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. During that time, her treatment will be supervised by Lockport City Judge William J. Watson in his drug court.

Johnson had cocaine, Xanax and Soma with her when Lockport police stopped her car Jan. 6, 2013, and agreed to forfeit $100 confiscated at the time of her arrest.

Defense attorney George V.C. Muscato said Johnson has osteoporosis and diabetes, and had obtained Xanax and Soma without a prescription.
