Jerry Turcotte credits his sons for helping him see the world differently, including when it comes to fitness and food.
Turcotte, 41, came to Buffalo to go to law school. He ended up marrying one of his classmates and settling down in the North Park neighborhood. He and his wife, Diana Proske, have two sons, Max, 7, and Simon, 3½, who inspired Turcotte to become a stay-at-home father, author and child fitness instructor. He has lost 70 pounds during the last three years and just published his second digital book, “Exercise Like the Animals A to Z,” which ties together animal movements and the alphabet. It’s available for $5 on Amazon.com. Max posed for silhouette photos to show movements 26 animals make.
What helped you lose all that weight?
Recognizing portion size – that has been the single biggest difference. It’s not sitting down with a bag of chips, it’s sitting down with a bowl of chips. It’s reading the back of the package and eating only one serving. I’ve been a vegetarian since I met my wife (in 2001). You can live a pretty unhealthy life as a vegetarian. It took time to realize I didn’t need all of that food. That was a big change. My wife is a magnificent cook. That helps. She cooks healthfully. We have lots of beans, lots of fresh vegetables. I’ve been into smoothies because I got a blender for Christmas.
