Water main break on Maple Road affects Maple East Elementary

A water main broke on Maple Road in Amherst Thursday afternoon, affecting Maple East Elementary School, Erie County Water Authority officials said.

The Williamsville Central School District canceled after-school activities at Maple East Elementary because of the main break. Students were dismissed at the regular time, according to a notice provided by the district.

Water Authority executive engineer Wes Dust said that water main breaks are common in winter when extremely cold water from the lake flows through the authority’s cast iron pipes, sometimes causing cracks.

The authority sees about 30 to 33 percent of its water main breaks during January and February, Dust said.

Despite the extreme cold the region has experienced this winter, Dust said, the leaks “haven’t been overwhelming. We’ve been able to stay on top of it.”

Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital was not affected by the break. The hospital has a second line that feeds into it so Water Authority officials worked with the hospital to do some “valving” to ensure water supplies would continue uninterrupted.
