Winter storms are Mother Nature’s way of saying, “Chill!” Use the bonus free time to try these purely for-fun ideas.

1. Build a snow-hurdle course and time each other running through it.

2. Instead of making a traditional snowman, create a sculpture like a snow car or a snow boat.

3. Make snow dough: This sparkly play dough has a slightly powdery texture just like real snow. Even better, it won’t dry out if it’s left uncovered (after nearly a month, our test batch was still usable). In a small bowl, stir 2 cups cornstarch into ∑ cup vegetable oil. With your fingers, knead in 6 tablespoons iridescent white glitter. If the dough is too dry, add more oil one tablespoon at a time, up to two tablespoons, until the dough is soft but a little crumbly. Makes 2 cups of non-edible dough.

4. Head indoors for hot vanilla (stir 2 teaspoons sugar and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract into a cup of warm milk) and curl up with a favorite book.

“All of my girlfriends interrogated me and asked, ‘Is he an amazing kisser?’ I’d sit them down and say, ‘All I know is his screen kissing is great.’ Then they’d get upset and say, ‘Tell me it was romantic and there were fireworks.’ There weren’t any. You do the takes in 17 hours, and it’s just hot and sweaty.”
