Paul Posluszny, Derrick Johnson box out Kiko Alonso as Pro Bowl replacements

Kiko Alonso isn't going to the Pro Bowl.

Marcell Dareus is.

Dareus was chosen to replace San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Justin Smith.

Dareus was a breakout performer and will make his first Pro Bowl appearance. He will join fellow Buffalo Bills defensive linemen Mario Williams and Kyle Williams and safety Jairus Byrd in Aloha Stadium on Sunday.

Alonso, the NFL's leader in fan voting among inside linebackers, seemed a possibility to replace either of the 49ers' injured linebackers, NaVorro Bowman and Patrick Willis.

But the Kansas City Chiefs announced today Derrick Johnson would replace Bowman, and the Jacksonville Jaguars announced former Bills linebacker Paul Posluszny would go for Willis.

Alonso theoretically could break the roster if somebody else pulls out, but that's unlikely at this juncture.

Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly and Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict are healthy and will relish their first Pro Bowls (some veterans who've been to the Pro Bowl before will come up with bogus injuries to avoid the trip and stay home).

The NFL doesn't reveal who Pro Bowl alternates are. Teams know, but many, like the Bills, decline to inform their alternates until they've been added to the Pro Bowl roster. Some teams are concerned agents will use "alternate" status as an honor when negotiating future contracts.
