LOCKPORT – Lafarge North America will hold a public meeting for Lockport-area residents at 7 p.m. today in the South Lockport Fire Company hall on Ruhlman Road.

The gravel-mining company will discuss its operations and its long-term plans for expanding its quarry to the south side of Hinman Road.

The Town Board gave Lafarge permission in December 2012 to mine an additional strip on the north side of the road, and the company is now seeking permission from the City of Lockport to mine an enlarged area within the quarry’s current boundaries.

The city Planning Board has approved that request, but the Common Council has shelved final approval to await a report from the city Engineering Department on whether the expansion and the attendant blasting would endanger the city’s water supply line from the Niagara River, which runs past the quarry.
