High School Extra: Panthers sweep Section VI Challenge

Panthers sweep Challenge

Sweet Home athletes won both the boys and girls team titles Monday in the Section VI Indoor Track Team Challenge at Fredonia State.

The Panthers girls took first place in seven of the 16 events as they totaled 99 points to win by 53 over second-place Frontier (46). Clarence and Lancaster tied for third with 42.

Sweet Home runners scored 1-2 sweeps in the 3,000-meter relay with Aileen Doyle and Ally Ortega and the 55-meter dash relay with Terionna Ware and Rachel Roberson. Ware and Roberson also finished 1-3 in winning the 300-meter relay.

Coach Brian Lombardo’s Sweet Home team also took first place in the triple jump (Sadira Brown and Nera Trueheart), 1,000 meters (Sam Peterman and Rachel Weissenburg) and 1,500 meters (Peterman and Doyle). It won the 4x200 relay with the team of Trueheart, Phyillicia Whitfield, Sadira Brown and Bella Calloway.

Kelsey Barrett and Christina Sipior finished 1-2 to win the 1,500 race walk for Lancaster. Grace Attea of Immaculata was first in the 600-meter run, but the Clarence duo of Hanna Reinhardt and Kristen George took team honors with a combined time of 3:42.20.

In the boys meet, Sweet Home had 95 points. Cheektowaga was second with 54 and Jamestown third with 48.

The Sweet Home boys were led its distance runners Mitchell Daddario, Mitchell Rabold, Matt Ciminella, Mitchell Ford and Chris Nowak and the Willson brothers, Josh and Justin, in the pole vault,

Daddario teamed with Chris Nowak to win the 1,600 and with Rabold to win the 1,000. Ciminella and Ford won the 3,200.

Lancaster got first places from shot putters Tony DeYoung and Brandon Sicurella. Cheektowaga won the high jump with Naem Shah and Kenny Dillenburg and the 4x800 relay with Jake Behlmaier, Noah McGhee, Kobe Walenka and Tim Whelan. Dawan Jones and Juan Martinez of Tapestry Charter teamed up to win both the long and triple jumps.

Trojan icers undefeated

James Wieczorek scored the winning goal with 26 seconds left in regulation, his second of the game, and West Seneca East (8-0-2) remained the only undefeated team in Division 2 of the Western New York Hockey Federation with a 4-3 victory over Williamsville East at the West Seneca Rink.

The Flames had tied the game on a goal by Jason Cohen with 2 minutes left.

Mike Benaquist, the Division 2 goals and points leader, and defenseman Travis Hicks each had a goal and two assists for the winning Trojans. It was the 16th goal of the season for Benaquist, who also has six assists. He was stopped five times on breakaways by Flames goalie Max Battistoni, who had 40 saves. Matt Radder had 41 saves for West Seneca East.

Tyler Trubish had two goals for Williamsville East (7-2-2).

Although West Seneca East is unbeaten, Kenmore East (9-1-2) leads the division with 20 points, two more than the Trojans. Kenmore East and West Seneca East will meet at 9 p.m. on Feb. 7 at the West Seneca Rink.
