Bentley wins opener against Canisius hockey

Penalties, including a 5-minute major for boarding, proved costly for the Canisius College hockey team (8-12-1, 7-6-1 AHA) in a 4-1 loss to Bentley (12-8-2, 10-3-2 AHA) in Atlantic Hockey at the Buffalo State Ice Arena.

Three of the Bentley goals came on the power play and one into an empty net with 30 seconds left.

The Griffs took a 1-0 lead when Tyler Wiseman put a wrist shot past Bentley goalie Branden Komm at 1:43 of the first period. Shane Conacher and Ralph Cuddemi assisted. After a Canisius goal was disallowed because it was ruled Kyle Gibbons kicked it into the net, the Falcons’ Jared Rickord tied it with 42 seconds left in the first period.

Bentley made it 2-1 at 9:37 of the second on the first of two power-play goals by Andrew Gladiuk. With Jack Hidi serving the boarding major, Gladiuk tallied again with 5:02 left in the game. Max French got the empty-netter.

Keegan Asmundson made 26 saves. Komm, a Williamsville native, had 20 stops for Bentley.

Canisius was 0 for 4 on the power play despite 11 shots on net.

“We knew coming into the weekend that Bentley was a great transition and power-play team, and we weren’t able to stop them today,” said Canisius coach Dave Smith.

The teams will wind up their two-game series today at 12:05 p.m.
