CHILI CHALLENGE – Cooks are invited to compete in the Parkside Community Association’s fourth annual Chili Cook-Off at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 8 in Jewett Hall of Church of the Good Shepherd, 96 Jewett Parkway. The evening is free and open to the public.

GO FOR THE SNOW – The Friends of Reinstein Woods are expanding their schedule of snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals to include Sundays from 1 to 4:30 p.m., beginning this weekend, weather permitting. Other Sunday rentals will be available Feb. 2, Feb. 16 and Feb. 23.

Fee is $5 per pair of skis or snowshoes, $2 for members of Friends of Reinstein. Rentals continue to be available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Credit cards can be used for rentals totaling $10 or more, except on Sunday, when it’s cash only.

Reinstein Woods, located on Honorine Drive, off Como Park Boulevard, in Depew, has several miles of wide, relatively level trails through forest and wetlands and is ideal for beginners. For info, call 683-5959 or visit


PACKED AND READY – Volunteers from Pet Connection Programs Inc., the special care and maternity shelter for dogs and cats in Marilla, will be selling reusable tote bags filled with dog treats from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in Walden Galleria, Cheektowaga, on the first floor near Sears. If you miss them this weekend, they’ll be back Feb. 1 and Feb. 15.


SAVORY SPOONFULS – Niagara Hose Fire Company No. 3 is holding a chowder sale Saturday in the Fire Hall at 74 Wheeler St., City of Tonawanda. Cost is $4 a quart. Chowder will be ready at noon. Advance orders will be accepted if you drop off a container.
