Maryvale School Board approves retirement incentive

The Maryvale Board of Education approved a teacher’s retirement incentive Monday night that could net the teachers up to $20,000 extra for health care costs. Administrators believe that, if successful, could net a significant savings for the district.

The incentive is limited to four employees, but the amount is tied to how many teachers accept the offer. If only two teachers accept, they would receive $10,000 toward health care costs. Three teachers would net $15,000 each, and four would receive the full $20,000. In order to qualify, teachers must notify the district of their intention to retire by Feb. 1.

Maryvale Board of Education Patrick Weisansal said the deal is similar to ones given to the district’s other bargaining units, one in which imposed limits to the number of employees who could take the incentive.

“If all four of those employees retire, we should give them the full amount” of the incentive, he said.
