Ceremony to be held today at Fillmore’s grave site

The annual commemoration of the birth of President Millard Fillmore is rescheduled for 10 a.m. today at the 13th president’s grave site in Section F of Forest Lawn, 1411 Delaware Ave. Fillmore’s birth date is Jan. 7, 1800, but the blizzard caused the ceremony to be postponed.

Col. John Higgins, commander of the 107th Airlift Wing, will place a wreath from President Obama at the grave. Members of the military traditionally present wreaths at the graves of deceased former presidents on their birth dates.

Representatives of the University at Buffalo will conduct the memorial service.

After his presidency, Fillmore was a co-founder of the University at Buffalo and served as its first chancellor.

Though not considered a strong president, Fillmore later became an important resident of Buffalo, where he helped found the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society, the Buffalo Club and Buffalo General Hospital.

He died March 8, 1874.
