Carney not in the running for election commissioner

LOCKPORT – Niagara County Republican Chairman Scott P. Kiedrowski said Wednesday that he’d prefer to promote someone on the GOP staff at the Board of Elections to the vacant election commissioner seat, but it won’t be Deputy Commissioner Michael P. Carney.

“I have a couple of folks in mind, but I am seriously leaning toward doing an internal move within the office,” said Kiedrowski, who was election commissioner himself from 2002 to 2010. “Mike Carney is not one of the folks I’m looking at at this time.”

Kiedrowski said, “I would assume Mike would continue” as deputy commissioner.

The GOP commissioner job became vacant when Mary Ann L. Casamento retired at the end of 2013 after 24 years with the Board of Elections, the last four as commissioner.

Kiedrowski said he expects to call a party meeting late in the month to nominate a successor to be placed before the County Legislature for confirmation in February.

The Board of Elections has two commissioners, one a Republican and one a Democrat. Lora Allen of Niagara Falls is the Democratic commissioner.
