Emergency training is priority for Silver Creek School District

SILVER CREEK – Administration, staff and teachers at Silver Creek Central School are learning emergency planning procedures by attending a series of meetings.

At the regular meeting of the Board of Education, held Wednesday in the school’s meeting room, it was announced that there will be a staff development day on the topic in February. There has already been training for administrative personnel.

Superintendent Daniel Ljiljanich said that Julius Leone, Chautauqua County’s emergency services coordinator, provided the training in the National Incident Management System. He said that administrative staff were all required to take tests after the training.

School Board members gave their approval for the district’s buses to be used for transportation of the residents of St. Columban’s on the Lake in the event there is an emergency requiring evacuation of the facility. Ljiljanich said that administration of the adult home reached out to the school to ask for help in its emergency plan.

In other business, board members will meet at 8 a.m. Saturday for the first budget workshop. Members will begin work on the 2014-15 spending plan that will go before the voters in May.

Due to the snow day on Wednesday, recognition of students as “knights of the month” has been moved to the next regular meeting on Jan. 22.

Three new elective classes were approved for the fall 2014 high school schedule. Journalism, career and financial planning and multicultural literature are the new offerings.

Board members Steven Booth, Matthew Bogosian and Irene Blakely were approved as members of the negotiating team for the upcoming contract with the Silver Creek Teachers Association.

A field trip request for seventh- and eighth-grade students to go to Washington, D.C., was approved. The trip is planned for April 10 to 14.

Michael Kempster was approved as the new technology coordinator for the district.
