Baron’s big night goes for naught

Billy Baron scored 27 points, his 10th game over 20 this season, but Canisius (9-6, 3-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) lost to Marist, 65-62, Monday night in the McCann Center in Poughkeepsie.

It was uphill all the way for the Griffs, who led only once (29-28).

The Red Foxes led 45-35 in the second half before the Canisius earned a tie at 55. Jay Bowie’s three put Marist back in front and another by him with a minute to go made it 63-57 afer a basket bay Baron.

Zach Lewis’ three cut it to 63-60 with 12 seconds left, but Marist closed it out with free throws. Baron missed a three that would have tied it.

Jordan Heath put it back for a two-point basket with one second left.

Baron made 10 of 21 shots overall, 4 of 10 from three-point range and had seven rebounds. Heath had 11 points for the Griffs. Khallid Hart and Chavaughn Lewis scored 19 each for Marist. Bowie finished with 18 including 4 of 8 threes.

In action scheduled for tonight, the Western Michigan University campus in Kalamazoo will be closed again today due to severe weather but this evening’s 7 p.m. women’s basketball game against the University at Buffalo (7-5, 0-1 MAC) will go off as scheduled.

The UB team was in Kalamazoo on Monday after a game at Bowling Green on Saturday.

Western is 5-7 overall, 1-0 in the MAC, after a win at Miami (Ohio) on Saturday when the Broncos put five players in double figures led by Michelle O’Brien’s 22 points.
