Get ready to lace up your ice skates for a spin around the basin at Martin Luther King Park in Buffalo.

Mayor Bryon Brown will be on hand at noon today, when ice skating returns to the park for the first time in more than 50 years.

“It’s weather dependent,” Michael J. DeGeorge, a spokesman for the mayor, cautioned Saturday. “Right now, everything’s a go.”

The basin – which serves as a splash pad during the summer – will be open for skating from noon to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. weekdays.

Skaters 12 and younger must wear a helmet and be accompanied by an adult. Used ice skates will be loaned out for free, courtesy of a recent collection by Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy.
