Sled hockey teams sponsored by the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins, including several members of the U.S. Paralympic Team headed for Sochi, Russia, in March, will face off Sunday morning in East Aurora.
The first annual Sled Hockey Classic, sponsored by the Aurora Ice Association, begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Healthy Zone Rink, 41 Riley St., East Aurora. Association Vice President John Cimperman said the rink uses ice-making equipment purchased from the National Hockey League after it was used at the first NHL Winter Classic at Ralph Wilson Stadium six years ago.
The rink has a roof but is not enclosed, and Cimperman said he believes it’s the first time these sled hockey teams have played outdoors. Admission is free, and players will be available for autographs after the game.
