Keem takes over as Orchard Park supervisor

Orchard Park Town Supervisor Patrick J. Keem pledged Thursday night to reach out to village and school district officials to find ways to work together and save money.

Keem, presiding over his first Town Board meeting after being elected in November, also said the entire board would work as a team.

“One of our goals is to contain spending and the cost of government, minimize taxes, while continuing to provide excellent service to town residents in a very efficient and cost-effective manner,” he said.

He said he plans to meet regularly with Orchard Park Village Mayor John B. Wilson, and create a liaison position between the town and school district. A Town Board member would become the “main point of contact” between the town and the Orchard Park Central School District, he said.

“The goal is to facilitate effective communication and mutual cooperation while exploring collaborative efforts of how we can all work together moving forward,” Keem said.

He noted that one of the first actions Thursday of the Town Board was to create a Senior Services Task Force to address the needs of the growing senior community.

The supervisor also said he believes citizens have the right to access documents and proceedings of government, which allows for effective public oversight.

“We want to be held accountable for our actions and have a transparent government,” he said.

Keem was joined in the reorganization and regular meeting by Councilman Eugene Majchrzak, who is starting his second term, and Councilman Michael Sherry, who was elected in November.

“I learned from both my parents that your own well-being and your own happiness is derived in large part by how you relate to others, how you treat others, in particular, how you serve others,” said Sherry, who also has served 25 years with the Orchard Park Police Department.

The board reappointed many town officials Thursday, and kept its regular meetings at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, with work sessions at 6 p.m. every Wednesday.
