Accreditation board upgrades police agency forensic lab

The forensic laboratory of Erie County’s Central Police Services agency has been upgraded by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board from merely accredited to its more stringent international accreditation in acknowledging it meets international standards for forensic operations, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz announced Thursday.

John Glascott, CPS commissioner, said, “We are confident that our laboratory is one of the best in the country and that our work leads to the apprehension and conviction of criminals that prey on the citizens of Western New York.”

“The hard work and dedication of Dr. John Simich, lab director, and Dr. Kori Ortt-Gawrys, its quality manager, and the entire lab staff has resulted in achieving this international accreditation, further evidence of the top-notch work they do in assisting law enforcement agencies across Erie County,” Glascott added.

Poloncarz and Glascott said the international accreditation assures that evidence submitted to the lab is reviewed and tested according to the highest scientific standards.
