Five arrested in check forgery scam

State police have arrested five people following an investigation into a check forgery scam.

The owner of convenience store in Hartland reported having received and cashed five suspicious checks, after which it was determined that the checks were counterfeit, according to state police.

Arrested and charged with 2nd degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and petit larceny were: Austin P. Hager, 19 of Dysinger Road, Lockport; Ashley R. Beutel, 25 of Lincoln Place, Lockport; Matthew D. Miller, 28 of Morton Ave., Lockport; Bethany M. Bayer, 30, of Pine St., Lockport; and Martin Z. Putowski, 35 of Haussauer Road, Amherst.

The suspects, who were arrested between Dec. 8 and Thursday, have all been arraigned and were released pending their future court dates to appear in Town of Hartland Court.
