How UB lost the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

How Aztecs Won: Hard to believe San Diego State never won a game by more than 10 points all season long. The Aztecs bring plenty of speed at the skill positions, are solid in the trenches and beat UB soundly in every aspect of the game. UB came in ranked No. 4 in the country in turnover margin and turnovers were indeed key. SDSU scored three TDs after UB giveaways.

Turning Point: UB reeled off 10 points to pull within 14-10 but San Diego State answered in a rush late in the second quarter. Not once but twice. Adam Muema scored from the 3 with 1:11 left in the half and Dylan Denso caught a 25-yard TD pass with 38 seconds remaining on the play after Joe Licata was intercepted.

Player of the Game: Muema tweeted recently that he’s going to forego his senior year and declare for the NFL Draft. It seemed like a reach. Maybe it’s not. He carved UB’s defense for 181 yards in the first three quarters.

Stat Check: SDSU had six players involved in plays covering 22 yards or more.

What It Means: UB goes into next season still wanting for its first bowl victory. San Diego State has played in four straight bowls, winning two.

In the House: The crowd of 21,951 was the bowl’s smallest since 1998.

Next Up: The Bulls bid adieu to 21 seniors and look ahead to 2014.
