Woman admits theft from elderly victim

A Cheektowaga woman this week admitted stealing up to $18,000 from an elderly woman with dementia.

Janelle L. Kowalewski, 31, of St. James Road, bought a Lincoln Town Car, a 55-inch flat screen television and other items with the money, prosecutors said.

Kowalewski pleaded guilty Thursday to third-degree grand larceny for taking the money last July from the 92-year-old woman, who now lives in a nursing home.

Kowalewski befriended the victim’s mentally ill son and started visiting her home, eventually learning where she hid her cash, prosecutors said.

She faces up to seven years in prison when sentenced April 17 by Erie County Judge Kenneth F. Case, according to Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III.
