A University at Buffalo international student was killed in a one-car accident early Thursday morning on Millersport Highway, police and university officials said.

Amherst police identified the student as Kuan Yu Wu, who is from Taiwan.

Investigators said that alcohol and speed may be factors in the crash.

“The victim was drinking at a party prior to the crash, according to witnesses,” police said in a statement.

The crash took place at about 5 a.m. on Millersport, just south of the Coventry Road entrance to the UB North Campus.

Wu was driving north in a 2006 Lexus when the vehicle left the roadway, crossed a wide median and three southbound lanes and came to rest in a snowbank, according to police.

Weather is not believed to have played a role in the crash.

The university said counseling services will be available for friends and classmates.

The accident closed a portion of Millersport Highway near Flint Road during the morning rush hour. It reopened at about noon.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call Amherst police at 689-1311.
