Propane tank explosion injures man

A 54-year-old man conducting routine maintenance on a propane delivery truck in North Collins Tuesday afternoon sustained burns to his face, hands and arms after the tank exploded, reported Collins State Police.

Lawrence P. Szal of Eden, an employee of Renaldo Sales and Service, was transported to Lake Shore Hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not believed to be life threatening.

The explosion occurred at the company’s North Collins location on Milestrip Road, police reports indicated. Szal was working near the rear of the tanker truck when residual fumes inside the tank ignited causing the explosion, police reported.

Police said co-workers were able to extinguish the fire while removing Szal and providing initial treatment.

Fire companies from the Town of Brant and Farnham responded to the scene along with Town of Brant police and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.
