Clipper system will deposit another layer of snow today

Keep your shovel handy. The National Weather Service says a clipper system will cross the region today, giving almost everyone another inch or two of snow.

After that, most places will get a break until next weekend, except for the traditional lake-effect areas in southern Erie County and northern Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, which could get another 3 to 5 inches late tonight.

There will be a break from the cold, too. Highs should reach the upper 20s today and Wednesday, then climb above freezing Thursday with sunshine. Friday’s forecast of rain with highs in the mid-40s should shrink those piles of snow significantly.

The lake-effect storm late Sunday, which followed a 6- to 8-inch general snowfall Saturday, hit hardest in northern Cattaraugus County, where National Weather Service spotters measured 14 inches of new snow in West Valley and 13 inches in Perrysburg.

Elsewhere, Varysburg received 11.8 inches, Orchard Park saw 11.5 inches, East Aurora had 10.5 and Warsaw had 10. Away from the squalls, totals were dramatically smaller. Official reading at the airport weather station in Cheektowaga was less than an inch.
