The Olean Common Council this week decided to remove 55 parking meters from some center-city streets in an attempt to draw more people downtown.
Forty of the meters will be removed from South Street, near the intersection with South Union Street. The remaining meters will disappear from Hamilton Street, connecting North Union Street to North Barry Street.
All of the meters on North Union are expected to be removed but could be reinstated on some sections in the future. During the week, most of those parking spots sit vacant and don’t generate the revenue needed to maintain them or to pay for parking enforcement, said Ward 3 Alderman Paul Gonzalez.
