Hamburg crash sends drivers to hospital

A 47-year-old Evans man charged with drunken driving and other offenses for allegedly causing an early Friday morning head-on crash on Lakeshore Road in the Town of Hamburg remained under medical care at Erie County Medical Center.

A younger Hamburg-area driver who was badly injured in the crash remained in the hospital’s trauma intensive care unit.

Police say Raymond Barrett drove his sport utility vehicle west on Lakeshore Road near Buckskin Trail about 1:30 a.m. Friday when he crossed over the double yellow markings and struck Neil Wansor’s smaller eastbound vehicle head-on.

Both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles.

Wansor, a Hamburg-area resident, was flown by Mercy Flight to ECMC.

Jessica Borowski, 18, a Hamburg-area passenger in Wansor’s vehicle, was also taken to ECMC, where she was treated and released with minor injuries.

Barrett remained hospitalized with an ankle injury.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated, felony aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle because of an earlier incident, driving to the left of pavement markings and moving from a lane unsafely.

Hamburg police officials said Barrett could face additional charges.
