Scam artists sought by police in Cattaraugus County

LITTLE VALLEY – Scam artists are targeting some of the grandmothers of Cattaraugus County, police warned on Monday.

The county’s Sheriff’s Office issued an alert, advising residents to be wary of a bogus bail money scheme.

In recent weeks, telephone scammers have been calling people – mostly grandmothers – to tell them that a loved one is in jail and needs money to be released on bail, police said. Victims have been asked for personal information, including Social Security numbers and debit and credit card numbers, police said.

Do not give out such information, and call the Sheriff’s office at (716) 938-9191 if you receive such a call, officials urged late Monday.

Police did not specify how many people have been victimized or how much money has been lost to the scam artists.
