New York is on track to meet health insurance enrollment goal

More than 100,000 people have signed up for coverage through the state’s health insurance exchange, with the deadline two weeks away for residents to enroll in plans that will begin in January.

With 100,881 people already enrolled in insurance coverage that will start on Jan. 1, state Health Department officials said Monday New York remains on target to meet its enrollment goal of signing up 1.1 million people by the end of 2016.

The state enrolled 24,700 people through the exchange during the past two weeks, boosting the total enrollment by 32 percent. A total of 100,881 people had enrolled for coverage as of Monday morning, up from 76,177 on Nov. 24, when the state last reported enrollment data.

In addition, more than 314,000 New Yorkers have completed their applications to obtain coverage through the exchange but still must select a plan from the 16 health insurers and 10 dental insurers that have been qualified to provide coverage through the program.

Residents must complete the application and select an insurer by Dec. 23 to be enrolled in coverage that begins on Jan. 1.

Residents have until the end of March to sign up for coverage.

The state has said it expects 615,000 individuals to sign up for private insurance in the first 39 months of the exchange. So far, the state has been enrolling residents at a pace that averages about 43,300 people per month.

A Health Department spokeswoman said the state is not yet able to release enrollment data broken down by region, or by insurance carrier, although it hopes to be able to do so shortly.

Information about the health exchange and the plans that are being offered is available on the NY State of Health website,
