What they do: Early-stage drug discovery and development, basically everything needed to get a new drug ready for use in clinical trials, on behalf of large pharmaceutical companies. Also some manufacturing of the active ingredients for drugs.

Best known for: AMRI has received millions of dollars in royalties from the production of fexofenadine – the prime ingredient in Allegra – but the last of those patents runs out in 2015.

What they do: Eighty-two-year-old supplier of imaging and diagnostic equipment, used in drug discovery and environmental testing, and of screening for newborns for infectious diseases.

Best known for: A former PerkinElmer division produced key components of the Hubble Space Telescope, including its mirrors and guidance sensors.
